Presidential election in favour of the PDP

President Jonathan Scores 25 Per Cent of The Votes Cast in 24 States and in The FCT

Results of the just concluded presidential election in Nigeria has just been released with the incumbent president President Goodluck Jonathan from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) coming first in all the votes cast in 24 states and in the Federal capital territory.

This authomatically qualifies him as the winner as certified by the electoral law that the winner of the poll must score 25 per cent of the votes cast in 24 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory required by the constitution to win the election

Results so far shown below according to states, party, votes and percentage are published on the INEC Official Website as follows:

Rochas Sets to Rescue Imo

It was indeed an interesting moment in the political scene since the creation of Imo State as Rochas Okorocha a famous philanthropist and one time presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in 2007 emerges as a flag bearer for the Igbo Traditional party, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

Owelle Rochas who admitted he was on a rescue mission disclosed in an interview in Radio Nigeria Heartland FM Owerri on Thursday 31 March 2010, 9am that his vying for the post of governorship in Imo State is indeed to deliver the state from the hands of terrorists who have kept the state in an ugly situation.

Rochas Okorocha rounded up his rally on the 31st day of March at the Okigwe Road roundabout as a result of the state government not granting him access to the state stadium (Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri).

Meanwhile numerous supporters from all parts of the states have so much commended on his unflinching efforts so far in granting their sons and wards free education even to the university level. Rumor has it that he is likely to win the forthcoming governorship election (on the 16th April 2011) in the state due to people’s interest in him. Rochas till date is the chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Association and the Founder of Rochas Foundation College Ogboko, Owerri, Ibadan, Lokoja and kanu.

Beatification of Pope John Paul II

The immediate past pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church Pope John Paul II was on the first Sunday of May 2011 beatified by the Serving Pontiff Pope Benedict XI at the St. Peter’s Square at 10:00 (4:00am ET).

Christ

Pope John Paul remains the longest serving Pope of the Roman Catholic Church having served for the period of 26 years. He was born in 1920 and died in 2005 after a protracted illness.

Until his death, Pope John Paul the second was said to have preached about world peace and reconciliation among the various tribal, ethnic and religious groups. He also remains the pope to have toured almost all the countries of the world preaching the goodness of Salvation through Christ Jesus. He is also one of the Catholic Faithful to have been confirmed Blessed in a shortest distance after his death.

John Paul II left a legacy and a footprint in the Catholic Church through his inventions and reformations. Among his laudable contributions before his death were the institution of the Luminous Mystery added to the Prayer of the Holy Rosary and the approval of the Divine Mercy Sunday in honour of Jesus

The chief leader and founder of the al Qaeda was on Monday, killed by the U.S. forces in a mansion located in Abbottabad, north of the Pakistani the capital of Islamabad. CNN reports that a senior U.S. official disclosed the mastermind of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil died along with other family members. A congressional source from the U.S. operation reported that Osama was shot severely on the head.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama in an address to the United States of America on Sunday night admitted the Bin Laden’s death is the most significant achievement to date in U.S.s effort to defeat al Qaeda.

Obama in his speech said: “Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan,” Obama said. “A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.”

One of the U.S. official who was not so elaborate disclosed to CNN that bin Laden was buried at sea and added that his body was handled in the Islamic tradition.

On the release of this news in New York and most other states hundreds reveled through the night, chanting “USA! USA!”, many sang the U.S. national anthem while others chanted “Hey, hey, hey, goodbye!” in reference to the demise of bin Laden. Cheering crowd gathered at Ground Zero the site where the twin towers of the World Trade Center once stood. Strains of “God Bless America” could be heard intermittently trickling through the crowd.

In an address to the nation Sunday night, U.S. President Barack Obama called bin Laden’s death “the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al Qaeda.”

President Barack Obama got a sobering, close-up look Friday at the nation’s most horrific tornado damage in decades, as crews continued to look for victims and the death toll hovered around 300.

“I’ve never seen devastation like this,” Obama said after touring the Tuscaloosa area. “It is heartbreaking.”

Imo State Guber Polls

Apart from the gubernatorial election results released for Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi where the ruling Peoples Democratic party PDP is retaining, the election in Imo State held on same Tuesday April 26, 2011 has remained inconclusive as was announced by the INEC Returning Officer Prof. Enock Akobuzor. Professor Akobuzor disclosed in Owerri, the state capital on Wednesday that the final results of the governorship poll could not be announced given reasons that results have only been collated in only 24 out of the 27 local government areas of the state.

He further stated that the three outstanding local councils are few wards in Ohaji/Egbema and Mbitoli where the result is being awaited and Ngor Okpalla where he said gubernatorial election never took place.

Professor Akobuzor admitted that the two leading gubernatorial candidates Rochas Okorochas of APGA and Ikedi Ohakim of PDP are so close going by the results from the other 24 LGAs and stated that the results so far were not enough to declare the winner in the gubernatorial polls.

Professor Jega

As Nigerians within and in the Diaspora look towards credible elections within the 3 weeks period to conduct elections for the upper legislative council, presidential, governorship and lower legislative council polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Professor Attahiru Jega in a brief meeting in Abuja few hours ago promised news managers and editors of ensuring credible election and positive and hitch free results.

Prof. Jega who vowed that results of the elections would be announced within 48 hours after the elections and disclosed his commission will be ready to nip the decisions of election riggers on the bud. He maintained that they would ensure maximum security to protect the vote of Nigerians with the professional and sophisticated machinery installed in all the 36 states of the federation.

Among the various techniques by INEC as he disclosed was the use of tracking devices on vehicles by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), whose personnel would be involved in the movement of election materials.

More so Jega said close circuit cameras are being installed in the polling centres across the country to check all the video events in the areas at the Abuja Headquarters. Jega in his own word has this to say; ““We have deployed, on experimental bases, electronic collation system, so that before results are declared we would know at the headquarters,” he said.

To make his words sound true, Jega promised to prosecute all those involved in multiple registration at the end of the election exercise. There too his revealed that more than 10 former governors are contesting for the positions of the upper legislative chamber. Among those listed are Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), Dr. Chris Ngige (Anambra), Chief Achike Udenwa (Imo), Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu), Dr. Bukola Saraki (Kwara), Dr. Olusegun Agagu (Ondo), Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Chief Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Alhaji Bunu Sheriff Musa (Borno), Alhaji Danjuma Goje (Gombe), Alhaji Makarfi (Kaduna), Alhaji Sani Ahmad (Zamfara), Mr. Boni Haruna (Adamawa) and Chief George Akume (Benue).
